Palming and the Palming RestPalming is a relaxation technique taught by Dr Bates to all of his patients because of the benefits (when practiced correctly) to all vision difficulties. It can be done using a Palming Rest as pictured or seated at a table with cushions supporting the arms, neck and shoulders are relaxed, not hunched up and the head supported by the spine (if arm support was removed the head should not drop forward). The hands are slightly cupped so as not to touch the closed eyes. Open eyes to check if any light is coming through, adjust hands and fingers until as dark as possible, then gently close the eyes allowing them to relax in a slightly downward position.
Palming is not a time for sleeping (although this does happen from time to time) it is a time of awareness of the breath, and of any discomfort or strain in the visual system or body. Allow any tension or strain to be released and drain away on the out breath. Palming can be done for any length of time from 2 minutes upwards, from 5 – 20 minutes is usually beneficial. Other useful palming positions;
Using skills from a previous career I have developed the Meir Schneider ‘Palming Stick’, adding a base support, 2 fully adjustable connecting poles and a comfortable wipe clean dense foam top. The shorter pole is for use - by small children - for resting on thighs when skirts or dresses are worn - in any situation when the longer pole is not suitable.

The warmth from the hands will help to release any tension in and around the eyes and the darkness will exclude any visual stimulation. Any images, colours, lights or whatever you may see must therefore be coming from the mind, these will usually clear if you allow the mind and body to relax.
